The Hidden Truth About Screen Mesh: Why Your Enclosure's Engineering Depends on It

You’ve finally decided to pull the trigger on that pool enclosure or screened-in patio. You’re dreaming of bug-free evenings, cleaner pool water, and a space where you can actually enjoy the Florida breeze without being eaten alive by those tiny, invisible "No-Seeums."
But then, you start getting quotes. Contractor A says one thing, Contractor B says another, and suddenly you’re hearing that you can have the "fancy" screen on the walls, but definitely not on the roof. Or maybe they don't mention the screen type at all, just a bottom-line price that looks too good to pass up.
I’m here to tell you that what you don't know about screen mesh can literally bring your enclosure crashing down during the next big storm.
At FrameOne Construction, we’ve been doing this for 21+ years. We’ve seen the aftermath of hurricanes and high-wind events, and we’ve seen why some cages stand tall while others end up in the bottom of the pool. Most of the time, it comes down to a detail that most homeowners think is just an aesthetic choice: The Screen Mesh.
The "Bologna" Factor: What Other Contractors Aren't Telling You
Let’s address the elephant in the room. You’ve probably been told by a salesperson that "you can't put 20/20 mesh on a roof." They might give you some vague excuse about "airflow" or "weight."
THAT IS COMPLETE BOLOGNA.
The real reason? They don’t want to pay for the engineering required to make it safe. See, 20/20 mesh (the fine stuff that keeps out No-Seeums) is much denser than the standard 18/14 mesh. Because it’s denser, it catches more wind.
When a contractor gives you a low-ball quote, they are often basing that price on a structure engineered for "standard" mesh. If they were to engineer it for 20/20 mesh, they’d have to use thicker aluminum, more bracing, or different fasteners. That costs more money.
Instead of being honest and giving you the price for the QUALITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE build you actually want, they tell you it "can't be done" so they can stay at a certain price point and win the job. It is a massive disservice to you, the homeowner.

The Science of the "Sail": 18/14 vs. 20/20
Think of your pool enclosure as a giant sail. In a Florida wind event, that wind is looking for any way to push against your structure.
18/14 Mesh: This is the industry standard. It has 18 holes per inch in one direction and 14 in the other. The "open area" is relatively large, allowing a good amount of wind to pass right through the screen.
20/20 "No-Seeum" Mesh: This has 20 holes per inch in both directions. It’s a much tighter weave. While it's GREAT for keeping out those tiny biting gnats, it also creates a much more solid surface.
When the wind hits 20/20 mesh, it can’t pass through as easily. This increases the wind load design pressure on the entire frame. If your enclosure was built with "Standard" engineering but covered in "No-Seeum" mesh, you are essentially putting a heavy-duty sail on a frame that wasn't built to hold it.

The Hidden Danger of Rescreening
This is the scenario that keeps me up at night. Imagine you hire "Discount Dan" to build your enclosure. He engineers it for 18/14 mesh, builds it, and leaves. Five years later, you’re tired of the gnats, and you call a rescreening company. You ask for 20/20 No-Seeum mesh.
The rescreening guy says "Sure thing!" and swaps out the old mesh for the fine stuff.
You have now inadvertently compromised your entire structure.
You have no idea that your aluminum frame was never designed to handle the increased wind pressure that 20/20 mesh creates. The next time a tropical storm rolls through the Tampa or Apollo Beach area, that frame is under way more stress than it was ever meant to handle. This is exactly why we see so many structures fail after a storm: people changed the "variables" without checking the "math."
Why "Good Enough" Isn't Good Enough in Florida
In Florida, we don't play around with wind. The building codes are strict for a reason. But here’s the kicker: A permit only ensures the bare minimum requirements are met for the plan submitted.
If a contractor submits a plan for a standard mesh enclosure but you think you're getting something else, or if they cut corners on the engineering details to save $500 on their bid, you're the one left holding the bag when the wind starts howling.
At FrameOne Construction, we believe you deserve HONEST COMMUNICATION. If you want No-Seeum mesh on your roof, we will engineer the structure for No-Seeum mesh. We will use the proper alloys, the proper beam sizes, and the proper connection points to ensure that your cage stays exactly where it belongs.

The FrameOne Difference: We Engineer for YOUR Life
Too many companies try to force you into a "cookie-cutter" box because it’s easier for their sales team. They want to sell you the same 18/14 cage they sold the guy down the street because they already have the template.
We don't work like that.
When we sit down with you in Apollo Beach, Brandon, or anywhere in the Tampa Bay area, we ask: How are you going to use this space?
Are you sensitive to bugs? You need 20/20.
Do you want maximum airflow? Maybe 18/14 is better.
Do you have pets that might claw the screen? We should talk about TuffScreen.
Whatever your choice, WE FACTOR THAT INTO THE ENGINEERING FROM DAY ONE. We don't hide the costs of safety. We provide SOLID PRICING that reflects a structure built to survive and thrive in our climate.
Don't Fall for the "Lower Price" Trap
It is incredibly tempting to go with the contractor who is $2,000 cheaper. But ask yourself: Where did that $2,000 go?
Did they skip the specific wind-load engineering for the mesh you want?
Are they using inferior fasteners that will rust out in two years?
Are they even licensed and insured? (We are, and we’ll show you the paperwork!)
Choosing a contractor who cuts corners on engineering is like buying a parachute because it was "on sale." It looks fine while you're standing on the ground, but you'll really regret the discount when you're in the air!

Let’s Build It Right the First Time
You deserve a backyard oasis that doesn't just look good: it needs to be SAFE. You shouldn't have to choose between keeping the bugs out and keeping your roof on.
Whether you’re in the market for a new pool enclosure, a composite panel patio cover, or a louvered pergola, don't let a contractor "Bologna" their way into your wallet. Demand to know what mesh your structure is engineered for.
